What people ask us about first

  • I am fed up with shaving, waxing or threading the same area every few weeks.
  • Will laser work on my skin tone and my hair colour?
  • Does it hurt, and how long does each session take?
  • How many sessions will I need, and what will the whole course cost?

What you can expect

  • A patch test first, so you can see how your skin and hair respond before you book a course.
  • A straight answer at your patch test on whether laser suits your skin and hair, and roughly how many sessions to expect for your area.
  • Less hair growth over a course of sessions. Most clients see around 80% less hair after a full course, though results vary from person to person.
  • Clear prices per area, with a course of 8 costing 30% less than 8 single sessions.

How it works

  1. Call to book your patch test

Laser is not on Treatwell yet, so call the salon on 020 3887 2181. Tell us which area you are thinking about and we will book you in for a patch test.

  2. Laser hair removal patch test and questions

We ask about your skin, hair, medication and medical history, then test a small spot with the Soprano laser. The patch test fee is taken off your first session.

  3. Wait and check

Your patch test needs to be at least 24 hours before your first treatment, so any reaction has time to show.

  4. Before each session

Shave the area the day before your session, not on the day. Do not wax, thread or pluck it, because laser needs the hair root in place, and come with clean skin and no tan on the area.

  5. Your course of sessions

Most areas need around 8 sessions, spaced weeks apart, because laser works on the hairs that are actively growing at the time. The face and bikini area can need more, sometimes 10 to 12.

  6. Top ups, if you need them

Some people come back for an occasional top up if hairs return. We will tell you honestly if you need one.

Good to know

  • Laser reduces hair growth over a course of sessions. It is not a one-off treatment, and how much the hair reduces varies from person to person.
  • Laser is for women and men aged 18 and over. Men pay the same prices. We do not treat intimate areas for men.
  • Our laser practitioner is Alma-trained for the Soprano and holds Level 5 and Level 7 aesthetics qualifications. We work with a Laser Protection Adviser and hold a Redbridge special treatment licence.
  • Redness or a little swelling around the hair follicles for a few hours after a session is common.
  • Tell us if you are pregnant, take any medication (including acne medication or antibiotics), have a skin condition, or have a tan or sunburn on the area. Some of these mean waiting, and some mean laser is not right for you.
  • Very fair, grey, white or red hairs usually respond poorly to laser. We will tell you at the patch test if that applies to you.

Aftercare

We give you aftercare advice at the end of each session. In general: keep the area out of strong sun and use a high-factor sunscreen, skip hot baths, saunas and the gym for a day or two, and do not wax, thread or pluck between sessions. If anything worries you, call the salon.

Laser hair removal patch test first

Every course of laser at NBA Clinic starts with a patch test. We ask about your skin, your hair and any medication, then test a small spot on the area you want treated with our Soprano Ice Platinum laser. The patch test fee is taken off your first session, and the test needs to be at least 24 hours before your first treatment. You go home, wait, and see how your skin responds. Only then do you decide whether to book a course. If laser is not right for your skin or hair, this is when you find out, before you have paid for sessions you cannot use.

How many sessions of laser hair removal?

Hair grows in cycles, and at any one time only some of the hairs in an area are actively growing. Laser works on those, so it takes a course of sessions, spaced weeks apart, to reach the hairs as each one comes into its growing phase. Most areas need around 8 sessions. The face and bikini area are slower and can need 10 to 12, while the underarms and legs tend to respond well. Your hair colour and thickness, your skin and your hormones play a part too, so we will tell you at your patch test what to expect. Most clients see around 80% less hair after a full course, though nobody can promise a result.

Face and body areas

Laser is used on the face and on the body, for women and men aged 18 and over. The areas people ask us about most are the upper lip and chin, the underarms, the bikini line, Brazilian and Hollywood, the legs and the arms. Men pay the same prices; we do not treat intimate areas for men. Tell us the area when you call to book your patch test, and we will tell you its size band and how long each session will take.

Laser hair removal on dark skin and brown skin

Whether laser suits darker skin is one of the first things people ask. Our Soprano Ice Platinum is suitable for all skin types. Darker skin can feel more warmth during a session, and we adjust the settings for your skin. The patch test is where we check: we test a small spot and tell you plainly what we think before you commit to anything.

Laser hair removal cost: what moves the price

The price depends on the size of the area and whether you book single sessions or a course. The table on this page, also on the full price list, shows every size band and the areas in it. A course of 8 costs 30% less than 8 single sessions, and booking a course of 8 for 2 or 3 areas brings the price per area down further. Between sessions, ask us whether threading or waxing is safe for other areas.

Who does your laser

Our laser practitioner is Alma-trained for the Soprano and holds Level 5 and Level 7 aesthetics qualifications. We work with a Laser Protection Adviser and hold a Redbridge special treatment licence.

Common questions

Where can I get laser hair removal in Ilford?

NBA Clinic does laser hair removal at 92 High Street, Barkingside, Ilford IG6 2DR, about a 12 minute walk from Barkingside station. Laser is not on Treatwell yet, so call 020 3887 2181 to book your patch test.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

Prices are per area and depend on the size of the area, in five sizes from micro (such as the lower lip or nostrils) to extra large (such as full legs or the back). Every price is in the table on this page and on our price list. A course of 8 costs 30% less than 8 single sessions. Book a course of 8 for 2 areas and each area is 40% less; for 3 areas, 50% less. The patch test fee is taken off your first session.

How many sessions of laser hair removal will I need?

Usually around 8. Laser hair removal is a course, not a single visit, because hair grows in cycles and laser works on hairs that are actively growing. The face and bikini area are slower and can need more, sometimes 10 to 12 sessions, while the underarms and legs tend to respond well. Your hair, your skin and things like hormones play a part too, so we will tell you at your patch test what to expect for your area. Most clients see around 80% less hair after a full course, but nobody can promise a result.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

Most people describe it as warmth rather than pain. Darker skin can feel the warmth more, and we adjust the settings for your skin. How it feels differs from person to person, so the patch test is a good way to find out before you commit to a course, and you can ask us to pause at any point during a session.

Will laser work on my hair colour?

Laser works best on hair with some colour in it, because the light is drawn to the pigment in the hair. Very fair, grey, white or red hairs usually respond poorly. Dark hair on darker skin needs the right settings and care, which is why we check your skin and hair at the patch test and tell you plainly what to expect before you book a course.

Is there any downtime after laser hair removal?

Most people go straight back to work or home after a session. Redness or small bumps around the follicles are common for a few hours, sometimes a little longer. Keep the area out of strong sun, skip hot baths, saunas and the gym for a day or two, and avoid perfumed products on the skin. We give you aftercare for your area at the end of each session.

Will the hair come back after laser?

Laser reduces hair growth over a course of sessions, but nobody can promise that every hair is gone for good. How much the hair reduces varies from person to person, and hormones can bring new hair through later on. That is why some clients come back for an occasional top up. We will be honest with you about what to expect for your area.

Which laser machine do you use?

We use the Soprano Ice Platinum, made by Alma, in our laser room on Barkingside High Street. It is suitable for all skin types, and we set it for your skin and hair. Our laser practitioner is Alma-trained for the Soprano and holds Level 5 and Level 7 aesthetics qualifications. We work with a Laser Protection Adviser and hold a Redbridge special treatment licence.

Do you do laser hair removal for men?

Yes. Laser is for women and men aged 18 and over, and men pay the same prices per area, for example the beard line, chest, back or shoulders. We do not treat intimate areas for men.

Do I need to shave before laser?

Yes. Shave the area the day before your session, not on the day. Do not wax, thread or pluck between sessions, because laser needs the hair root in place.
