What people ask us about first
- I want a cut or a blow dry this week, close to home, without a trip into Ilford.
- I am not sure whether my hair counts as short, medium or long, and I don't want a surprise at the till.
- I want to go lighter or try balayage, but I am nervous about the colour coming out wrong.
- My hair is frizzy and hard to manage, and I keep hearing about keratin treatments.
What you can expect
- A cut, restyle, fringe trim or blow dry, from a quick wash and blow dry to a full restyle.
- Colour, root colour, full head, half head and T-section highlights, or balayage, after a conversation about what you want and what your hair can take.
- A keratin treatment or Brazilian blow dry to smooth frizz and make hair easier to style for weeks, depending on your hair and how often you wash it.
- Conditioning, scalp treatments and hair masks for hair that feels dry or tired.
- A price you can check in advance: every service is listed with short, medium and long hair prices where they differ.
How it works
-
Pick your service and hair length on Treatwell
Choose the service and the length that matches your hair. If you are between lengths or unsure, ask us to confirm the price before your appointment starts.
-
Patch test before colour
Patch test: 5 minutesIf you are having colour or highlights with us for the first time, book a patch test first. It is free on our Treatwell menu and takes about five minutes. Ask when you book how far ahead of your colour appointment to have it.
-
A conversation before anything starts
Before the scissors or the colour come out, your stylist talks through what you want. Bring a photo of what you like and, just as useful, one of what you don't. For colour, mention any box dye or henna, because it changes what is possible in one visit.
-
Your appointment
30 minutes to 3 hoursCuts and blow dries take 30 to 60 minutes; colour, highlights, balayage and keratin take roughly one and a half to two and a quarter hours, depending on length.
-
Check it before you go
Tell us before you leave if a length, a fringe or a tone is not right. It is easier to adjust while you are still in the chair.
Good to know
- Hair colour can cause a reaction in some people, so a patch test before a first colour matters, even if you have coloured your hair before.
- Going much lighter, especially from dark or previously coloured hair, can take more than one appointment to reach safely.
- Henna and some box dyes react with salon colour and lighteners. Tell us if you have used either, even months ago.
- Keratin treatments and Brazilian blow dries usually need you to wait before washing or tying your hair. Your stylist will tell you how long for the product used.

Aftercare
After colour, highlights or balayage, a shampoo and conditioner made for coloured hair helps the tone last. After a keratin treatment or Brazilian blow dry, follow the wash and styling advice your stylist gives you, and use a sulphate-free shampoo. If anything about your cut or colour is not what you expected once you are home, call the salon and talk to us.
Cuts, restyles and blow dries
Our cutting menu runs from a fringe trim to a full restyle. A wash, cut and blow dry is the usual booking; a wet or dry cut costs less if you are happy to dry it yourself. If you want a big change, book a restyle, which gives your stylist the time to plan the shape with you. Curly and bouncy blow dries are on the menu for a night out or an event.

Colour and root colour
Root colour covers regrowth; full head colour changes or refreshes the whole head. Both come with a blow dry, a rough dry or a cut, which is why there are several prices for each. If you are covering grey for the first time or changing shade, you agree the tone with your stylist before the colour goes on.
Highlights
Full head highlights lighten the whole head in fine sections. Half head highlights focus on the top and sides, where the light falls, and cost less. T-section highlights are lighter still: just the parting and hairline, which is a good way to brighten between full appointments.

Balayage
Balayage is hand-painted, so the colour sits where the sun would naturally lighten your hair and grows out without a hard line. It suits people who want a lighter look without booking every few weeks. On dark or previously coloured hair, the first balayage may be a softer step, with more lightness added on a second visit.
Keratin treatment and keratin blow dry
If frizz is the daily battle, a keratin treatment or a Brazilian blow dry can make your hair smoother and much quicker to style. Prices and times go up with length, because longer hair takes more product and more time. Chemical straightening is a separate, longer service for a more lasting straight finish.

Hair treatments for dry hair
A conditioning treatment, a conditioning and scalp treatment, or a hair mask can be added to most visits for hair that feels dry, brittle or tired.
We are on Barkingside High Street, a short trip from Gants Hill, Newbury Park and Ilford.
Common questions
Where is your hair salon in Barkingside?
We are at 92 High Street, Barkingside, Ilford IG6 2DR, about a 12-minute walk from Barkingside station on the Central line. Clients come to us from Barkingside, Gants Hill, Newbury Park and Ilford for cuts, blow dries and colour. You can book any hair service on Treatwell and choose a time that suits you.
How much is a haircut or blow dry?
All our hair prices are listed on this page and on the full price list, taken from our Treatwell menu. Most cut, blow dry and colour prices depend on hair length, so you will see three prices: short, medium and long. Thick hair can take longer than its length suggests, so if you are between lengths, ask us to confirm the price before we start.
How long does balayage or highlights take?
Balayage and full head or half head highlights take a little over two hours, and T-section highlights about two hours. That includes the conversation at the start, applying the colour, the time it needs to develop, rinsing, and a blow dry or cut if you have booked one. A big change, such as going much lighter from dark hair, may need more than one visit.
What is the difference between balayage and highlights?
Highlights are placed in fine sections from close to the root, so the lighter colour is even across the head. Balayage is painted on by hand, usually lighter towards the ends, so it grows out more softly and needs less frequent upkeep. Half head highlights are a lighter-touch option that focuses on the top and sides. Your stylist can tell you which suits your hair.
Do I need a patch test before hair colour?
A patch test is the safe way to start any first colour with us. Hair dye can cause a reaction even in people who have coloured their hair for years. The patch test is free on our Treatwell menu and takes about five minutes. Ask when you book how far ahead of your colour appointment to have it.
What is a keratin treatment, and how is it different from a keratin blow dry?
A keratin treatment and a Brazilian blow dry are both smoothing treatments that reduce frizz and make hair quicker to blow dry. They are not the same as chemical straightening, which changes the hair's structure for a longer-lasting straight finish. How long the smoothing lasts depends on your hair and how often you wash it. Both take one and a half to two hours depending on length.
Is there any downtime or aftercare after colour or keratin?
There is no downtime: you leave with your hair finished. After colour, use a shampoo for coloured hair and expect the first wash or two to release a little colour. After a keratin treatment or Brazilian blow dry, you will usually need to wait before washing or tying your hair back. Your stylist will give you the exact advice for the product used.
Do you cut men's hair?
Our hair menu is for ladies' cuts, colour and treatments. For men we offer waxing, facials and laser hair removal, which you can see on our waxing, facials and laser pages. If you are not sure whether we can help with something, call the salon and ask before you book.
